Imagine this: it’s really late and you’re on the highway. You’re the only one in the car. Why? Is there music playing? How do you feel? You’re driving, you’re the only car for miles. You’re going somewhere. Are you going fast? Are you going slow? Where are you going? You drive for 10 miles before you see blue lights flashing in your rearview mirror. As you pull over, what are you feeling? Are you scared? Wondering what you did wrong? Do you care at all? You roll down the window but instead of it being a cop it’s the most important person in your life. “Now, what are you doing out here on the highway by yourself?” What are you going to say? This is your life. Where are you headed? Just to get fries and a milkshake, going to another city, or just to clear your head?
You are in the driver’s seat of your life since you were born. You got in, and you’re out there on open road with your life. The point of this is do you know where your drive is in life? Are you passionate about doing something? Is there something inside of you you can’t sit down? I’ve been thinking a lot lately about drive. That’s what got 10 Grammy Award winner Taylor Swift to Nashville knocking on doors and signing out that lead her that first deal with a major label she later left. It’s what got Oprah Winfrey to keep working after she got fired being ‘unfit’ for TV. I think the people out there who have made a name for themselves and that haven’t in some way worked hard are lucky. It’s a little bit rare to get discovered on YouTube like Justin Bieber did.
This video is from 2014, but I just saw it this year. Selena talks about how in her life her mom worked so hard working four jobs to provide for her. When she was younger a casting director told her she wasn’t strong enough to hold her own show. Now, I know as an actor or actress you want nothing more than to be the best you can and have parts. I know this would’ve been devastating. It’s hard to get drive just by yourself after hearing something like that. It’s so easy to give up. Easy isn’t the way incredible things happen. Her mom pushed her and two years later Selena got her own show. Her mom supported and provided to give her the best but Selena had to believe in herself and drive herself to do what her mom knew she could.
It’s so easy to give up. So easy to just not keep on going. Easy doesn’t get you far. You work hard for the life you want to see in your future. It’s one of the reasons we continue on in college. I bet when Katy Perry was trying to make it when she was broke in California calling her younger teenage brother at the time for money that was a low for her. I could imagine in that moment it would be so hard not to give up. She didn’t and landed herself a record deal eventually. The hardest parts in life are what makes you stronger.
I give up so easily. There are many things I wanted in life but I just wanted them. My drive was low. I’m guilty of starting projects and stopping them. Now, I’m not really happy to see where my life has ended up. Now I’m starting to change my life around. I cut off ties with people and distracting boys. Let me tell you if anything will get you off track it’s the wrong people in life. Having this blog puts me back into a drive mode. I make a set amount of posts a week and this is the last day of the first week. I’ve never been so excited in my life! This is an amazing experience. I’m starting to go to open mics again. I’m just switching my life back around to where it should’ve been this whole time. I hope you can too.
I hope that if it’s you on that highway driving that you know exactly where you’re going. If you don’t have a big dream you want to accomplish, then that’s okay. You can drive through cities and roads to see what you want and like in life. Just always remember you are the driver. You control who sits in the passenger seats in your car. You control where you’re going in life. If you want something badly, research. Find ways. Save up all the money you can and go there.
The hardest part about your mission and your journey of life is that everyone around you will not be on board. There will be people who are jealous, and out right mean. A teacher once told me that I’m not an actress. Everyone doesn’t love the way I sing. I’ve had a lot of people who put me down in life. It’s difficult to bounce back from negative words even if you’re surrounded by so many good people. The best thing to do is to only surround yourself with these people. That’s what made a difference for me and in my life.
When Tori Kelly auditioned for American Idol Simon Cowell thought her voice sounded annoying. I know I would’ve given up right there. Simon Cowell said this about my voice. Tori kept going and she kept making videos. To see where she is now is incredible. It’s really inspiring for me because she kept going. Even if it seems like the most important person doesn’t support you or your dreams you keep going. If someone tells you something negative (like Selena’s song) who says? Who are they to tell you about your life and your dreams?
I have a friend Kennedy who wants to model. I’ve known this for so long. She’s fascinated with New York. She hasn’t had luck with agencies so far but she is persistent. She saved up and she got there and has been living there for a few months. I’m a little bit envious of her but then again I can’t just pack up my life where I’m at. I don’t have a plan but she did. She knew what she wanted to do and she got there. I’m telling you about Kennedy because she had that drive. You have it in you too. Even if it’s deep down. You will find it.
